What is H-Rail Hardware?

Choosing the perfect hardware for your window treatments is like choosing the perfect accessories to complement your outfit! And in the world of hardware, the possibilities are endless.

Deciding on the right hardware will depend on many factors, including the fabric, the aesthetic of the space, mounting options, budget, and how (and if) the client wants to operate their drapes.

Traverse rods are a very popular choice for draperies that are frequently opened and closed, due to how easily they “traverse” on a track.

Today, I'm sharing an inside look at traversing hardware known as H-Rail Hardware.

What is H-Rail Hardware?

The “H” actually refers to what's inside the drapery rod.

Why is it called H-Rail Hardware? The obvious answer here seems like it would be the “H” shape seen from the outside. But H-Rail hardware is available as both a double rod or a single rod - so you wouldn't see the “H” shape on the exterior if you selected a single H-Rail rod.

See the “H” on the inside of the rod?

The “H” actually refers to the mechanism inside the pole. It's a bit like a channel track with two vertical sections connected by a horizontal middle piece, forming that recognizable H-shape. This design is what gives H-Rail its name.

Why we love it (and you will too)

Bright and sunny! Collaboration with the fabulous Michele Plachter Design.

H-Rail hardware is sleek and modern, making it perfect for contemporary interiors. It offers a clean and minimalist look that can enhance the overall appearance of your window treatments.

It is extremely versatile. Single or double rod; ceiling or wall mount; customize the finish and finials; and it can be motorized!

When to choose an alternative

Lovely layers! And oh so easy to open and close thanks to the double H-Rail hardware. Collaboration with the talented Michele Plachter Design.

While super versatile, H-Rail hardware may not be the best option for all projects. Its contemporary style may not suit interiors with a more traditional aesthetic, and the high-quality H-Rail hardware can be a bit more expensive than some other options.

It can also be complicated when it comes to ordering and installation. It is so, so important to dot your i's and cross your t's when it comes to measuring and ordering, and professional installation is a must.

Yellow is such a happy color! Collaboration with the talented Michele Plachter Design.
